Essential Fats - Is Fat Really Good for You?

00:01 Good morning, welcome to today's chiropractic and nutrition here on unforgettable 12, 20 in classic hits, Ninety nine seven crystal Roberts here and with us in the studio, Deb Ford Msrd have a good earth health food shop and Dr Ian Rini, doctor of Chiropractic as well. Hey, good morning and welcome in. What's the big topic of discussion here this morning? I think today we're going to start out talking about essential fats. Everybody always hears about Omega three and Omega six. So we thought we would just discuss a little bit about it, maybe clear up some of the questions while I have a question to start out with, what is an essential fat? Most of us are told fats are bad. We should avoid. Oh no, everything has been reversed on that. Um, yeah. The body needs fat. Every membrane in your body has healthy fats, must have healthy fats or you get into trouble with inflammation, increased risk of lots of problems in the liver, the kidneys, the digestive system, so need to have healthy fats.
00:57 And when we say essential, that means your body cannot make them or put them together like lego blocks from other fats. They must get them as they are from food. So they're essential to your diet. Exactly. You must get them through your food, through your. And if, if not from your food, you got to get them from pills. I'd rather get them from food. But we, we've always got good backups. So when you say essential fatty acids are essential for your dive, but what are these, what are these? You know, Omega three we hear about, you know, that's why doctors for years have told people to eat fish three times a week. Cold water, fatty fish like salmon around here, we're more farmers and fishermen. And most people do not get those Omega threes. So what, what can they do to get those? What if they don't like fish?
01:50 Yes. Yes. Like it stinks when you cook it or, or if you do like fish around here, most of it is going to be a deep fried. It's going to be breaded, it's going to be drive through, grab a filet or whatever. And um, you usually have a really bad balance in that and so you kind of want to stay away from that. But if you want to get really good healthy fats, Omega three in your diet, I really like flax oil. That is my absolute favorite. Um, some of the research suggests that fish is actually better, but I always say listen to your body because there are some genetic variations that keeps people from utilizing the fish as well as the plant source. So Omega three, some of the sources from Omega threes are going to be your flax oil. They're going to be your walnuts.
02:48 You could even get it from flax seed. But I like to give the analogy of corn meal to corn oil. You've got to squeeze a heck of a lot of corn meal, get the Cormo. Same with the flax, you know, if you can add some flax seed to your cereal, whatever like that. But with cereal also, you're going to get a lot of Omega six, so you've got to keep things in balance. So Omega three, flax oil, great salad dressing. I'm. Oh Wow. Yeah, you can do that. You can also eat walnuts, love Walmart's wheat, germs, going to be a little bit of, you can also get a smidge from soybeans, but you definitely want to get the non genetically modified soybeans. That's very important. Say Canola, canola oil I'm not a fan of because it's almost all genetically modified and it's not something that humans have used in their diet a traditionally.
03:46 So it's kind of a new thing on the block. So I like to go with what's tried and true. So foods that we have eaten for a long time. So, so we have a lot of good substitutes for, for Omega threes if people don't want to eat fish. Right? Right. And, and when there was, you know, here in the United States we went on that whole low fat fad that now scientifically has been reversed. So if you're looking for nonfat things, think again, you really don't want that because those fats are really important. They keep inflammation out. I know this is something that I really had an experience with over 20 years ago when, uh, the whole low fat thing was really important. And went through a whole pregnancy, not really trying to be low fat, but it was just the foods I ate and what I was surrounded with was all low fat.
04:42 And after the pregnancy I got so achy and in my joints started hurting my knees, my feet. I mean, it was like really hard in the morning, just just inflamed. And you know, I was thinking no, I was too old to have a baby of silly stuff. And so I set my blood work into one of our professional companies. This was before I went back to school and a Harry I'd near brilliant man. He had his doctorate in nutrition way before anybody really thought much about that. But anyway, he, he put me on flax oil and it was the equivalent of about two tablespoons a day, which is a pretty hardy dose. I was dried out. I mean, when I looked at my blood work now is like, yeah, I wasn't, I didn't have much to work with there. And um, so within two days all that inflammation was gone.
05:34 So I've, I've always been a big fan of the Omega Three real important for brain health. It's um, yeah, just everywhere digestion. Then also I put my, our, um, our daughter on Dha because I figured if I was low in it she was going to be low in it and Dha is so important for the development of the brain and for focusing and she's definitely not add or Adhd. So she is, she is good. She is good. So, um, I am a big one on the Omega three, so many amazing benefits on the Omega threes and we're so deficient in it. So it's, it's one of the things that I like to stress a lot.
06:17 This is where we do the warning about the, about the milk that has the fish oil in it. Go ahead. Is there a milk that has Michelle Dij? Okay. So if you get that milk and I did, um, uh, you know, it's great. I mean, you drink it and you don't taste it, but if you heat it up and try to add something when it's heated up, like, like the tomato soup or something like that, it's a, you better like fish because it's, it's gonna, it's gonna. Make your tomato soup, tastes like clam chowder.
06:47 Something's wrong here. Something's wrong and throw it out. Your taste the milk and start all over again. Uh, yeah. So you just kind of have to be aware of that if you get the Dha and, and see that's, that's what we're there for. Defying a lot of the milk now with Dha because it's so essential for children's brains. And we, the United States was way behind on this. Uh, Europe would supplement the baby formula with Dha, which is part of the healthy fat of Omega three and A. Japan would definitely, we didn't. And um, you know, I think that was to the detriment of um, maybe a whole generation of children. Um, the brain has to have it and I think we have so totally altered the fat in our diet for way too many years when we went away from the healthy fats, have butter and real fats and went to the phony fats like margarine and, and all that. It's not been a good thing. So we really, really need to get back to those good healthy fats.
07:52 Yeah. Yeah. Well, and also people who are starting to walk and exercise now that the weather's getting warmer, uh, you know, a lot of times people say, well, I want to exercise but it hurts. I don't want to get up and this would be a great way to get those joints lubricated and get that inflammation.
08:07 I take it for me, it really helps. And I always know when I'm needing a little bit because my, my little, my index finger starts to hurt just a little bit and I thought, you know, Oh, I'm just going to be like all the other women in my family that, you know, my, my mom has arthritis in her hands and the joints got big. And in my grandmother had arthritis in her hands. I thought, Oh, here I go, and no, so totally stop that inflammation. Um, and, and it's always very important to listen to your body. So even though the research says fish, when I had my dna done, it reinforced the fact that the plant source works much better for me. When I would switch over to fish oil capsules, that little finger would start talking to be again. So, so food sources, you know, the best way I like to get the flax oil for your source of Omega three is as a salad dressing.
09:00 You can just pour that on your salad, you can mix it in with things, but you have to be careful. It's a tender oil and you cannot cook with it. If you heat it up, it's going to break down. Uh, you also have to be real sure it's fresh. Uh, there is a on the label you want to pay particular attention to the expiration date. You want to keep it refrigerated because after oils are pressed, just like with nuts, just like with butter. Um, but more so with the Omega three ones they will tend to spoil and the last thing you want to do is take in rancid fat. So keeping it refrigerated, watching out for that expiration date. And if you ever think it tastes a little funny, pitch it, get a fresh one, you don't want to take any chances. Wow. Great Information. Yeah.
09:51 And same with flax meal, you know, when, when you get it, it probably is not refrigerated so you've got to know that they package it so there's no oxygen in there so it won't spoil. As soon as you open it up, then that degrading is going to start taking place. So you want to keep it either in the freezer after you open it and, or the refrigerator. Yeah. You can taste that ff that fat's gone. Rancid. Yeah. A lot of people don't know what rancid fat tastes like. So it's, you know, it's, it's a distinct flavor. So if it smells funny, tastes a little funny, that's probably any change is not normal. Yeah. Yeah. Good. So what about the omega six fatty acids? What are, what are those important for? Well, Omega six and Omega three kind of have to be in balance. Okay. So Americans have gotten an abundance of Omega six, Omega six, you know, the whole corn oil, safflower oil, sunflower oil, sesame, all those are huge.
10:58 Omega six that has been plentiful in our diet for generations. Also. Most meats are going to be high in Omega six, but all grains are high in Omega six. So they are also, if you get them out of balance with the Omega three that really exaggerates the inflammation. So, so, you know, I'm, I'm not a big one on Omega six. We've got plenty of that, but you do need to to think about balance and you don't want to overdo and underdo. Uh, but one exception to that is going to be a, an Omega six fat that is called Gla, which is the gamma linolenic acid, linolenic acid. And that's anti-inflammatory. Oh, it's a one that is actually very good. Okay. So, so somebody who has a high ratio of Omega sixes or they're eating a lot of fried foods and things like that, they're going to have a lot of swelling in American that has not had a whole lot of fish.
11:57 Yeah. Yeah. Well, and, and then, you know, with fish, boy. Oh boy. I've, I've done a lot of research on fish this week. Oh my goodness. Um, you know, kind of fishing. Oh Wow. It's fishes so contaminated with arsenic. It's not funny. Um, you know, all well and they farm fish now because there's no way they can keep up with the demand for seafood. We're all told a lot of seafood. So there's a lot of farming of fish that's taken place and just with, you know, how we cram all the cows into these mega farms and how we cram all the chicken into these mega farms. They're doing the same thing with fish and so then they have problems with infection and parasites and, and because they are on the bottom of the ocean, you're getting a lot of the arsenic that they're taken up. Arsenic is carcinogenic.
13:06 So you're really, um, the, it's hard to get fresh, good healthy fish where, yeah, where you're getting naked through to when you. I mean, when you buy good wild. Yes, yes. Yeah. You want to get it ocean caught. You don't want it to be in cages and things like that. It's, I don't know. I mean there's, there's gotta be a way to figure out how you're going to get good fresh, clean fish. But anytime, anytime anybody's interested in a business raising fish in a fish farm, they're going to look for economy of scale, right? Look for a lot of sites to create as much product for as little, uh, input costs as possible. And if those people are doing it in an altruistic, somewhat altruistic fashion, in order to provide good quality food, then you're going to get what comes along with it. And this is a real opportunity.
14:00 And, and in fact, um, Mexico is subsidizing some of the fish farming that's done way out in the ocean. So you get all of the, you know, the, the toxins and the waste product from the fish that are in open wide nets and cages. So you get a dilution of all this. Mexico is absolutely subsidy, actually subsidizing some of the good healthy farm fishing. Um, Japan. Not so good. Taiwan not so good. Uh, yeah, it's, it makes me nervous every time I think about ordering fish, you're going to pay for the price. Um, and, and the impact that all of this mega farming for animal products and the impact it's having, having on greenhouse gasses, climate change. It's kind of kind of sobering. Um, so that's why I guess I'm, I'm going leaning more towards the plant based sources because you can do that healthfully cleanly and it's not putting a big burden on our climate, on our culture, on, uh, and it's. And it's good for the
15:14 economies. You know, that's, that's an interesting question because we think, uh, it here in America that we rule the world and we don't anymore. We haven't for quite some time. We have maybe like to again sometime, but, but I guess my point is, is that while we may make some changes here, you know, what's, what are the Chinese and the Indians going to do,

And, and you know, that's the thing we are so good about marketing and advertising the American way that Korea, China and India, their intake of red meat is estimated to go up 50 to 70 percent in the next couple of decades because yeah, they're all, they're all embracing it. And with that increased intake, they're warning their people through their government agencies that it's increasing their risk of increased cancers, increased heart disease. You know, America doesn't have the market on that. It really is the high red meat, the high,
16:12 high saturated fat. We're, uh, we're, we're outsourcing our diseases to supporting their health plans and exporting our diseases.
16:22 Good at advertising that. So, you know, it's, it's so important to be conscious of those choices we have in and we do have choices with every bite. You take a, it has such an impact on your longterm health. Yeah.
16:39 Well, one of the companies that you care, you were talking about Harry, I'd near earlier and I was doing some research on their company and the, the, the methods that they use to inspect the quality of all their products is tremendous. It really is. And they kind of show how, you know, whatever gets rejected gets picked up somewhere else along the way so you know it, you do get what you pay for and there are some really. It's important to have good quality fish oil too. To know your lesson. You can take away here is just a know where your stuff that you're putting into your body comes from that's important to get it off the Internet. You're probably going to have a

17:18 store. I know that people come to you all the time of the good earth health food shop and they say, Oh, do you have that stuff I was reading about on the Internet? And some of the things that they tell you about, you would no sooner stock than you would guns.
